Overview of Pilgrimage map
The web map of the Pilgrimage Route portal (www.palverand.ee) was created as a collaboration between the Land and Spatial Development Board and the friends of Pirita Monastery.
The web map displays the points on the pilgrimage route and recommended routes to use to complete them. The pilgrimage route starts at Pirita Monastery, passes through seven counties' attractions and ends at the Vastseliina Castle Visitor Centre. In several places, the route is divided into alternative branches, which later come together again. The main route is approximately 460 kilometres long and it will take at least two to thirty days to complete it on foot. It may also be considered reasonable to "undertake" the pilgrimage route in parts. In addition, the map shows 134 km of alternative paths, 27 branches and a 24 km distance covered by boat. This makes a total of 645 km of travel options!
The fieldwork was carried out by the Friends of Pirita Monastery, led by Lagle Parek, who visited all the points of interest and actually walked the entire route in nature. The route has tried to avoid roads with heavy traffic (unfortunately, this is not possible everywhere), to prefer nature trails, and to include places of cultural and historical importance that have received little attention so far.
The Land and Spatial Development Board mapped the points of interest and recommended routes as accurately as possible and created a web map.
The route has not yet been finalized, because the development of the route and the specification or addition of points of interest and stops continues year after year with the help of the Friends of Pirita Monastery and other participants.
