Overview of natural sacred sites web map
The Natural Sacred Sites web map compiles location data for sacred groves and other historical natural sacred sites from various map layers of the Land and Spatial Development Board and from surveys organized by the University of Tartu Centre for Sacred Natural Sites, the Estonian Heritage Board and the Sacred Grove House Foundation.
Sacred natural sites are displayed in the web map as point, line and area objects, which are usually surrounded by a 50 m wide safety zone. For the sake of better visibility of area objects, a point object has also been added to them, which is visible up to a scale of 1 : 10,000.
The object information window presents the name of the sacred site, address, historical parish, condition and references to spatial and other data sources.
To facilitate the use of data related to sacred sites, including research, it is possible to open additional map layers in the left menu of the web map, such as: cultural monuments, heritage objects, crosses, local traditions, forest register, nature conservation, historical administrative division, etc.
The goal of the web map is to provide spatial data on sacred natural sites to landowners, local communities, municipalities, followers of FSC voluntary sustainable forestry certificates, as well as researchers interested in natural and cultural heritage and the general public.
The web map has been created by the Hiite Maja Foundation in cooperation with the Land and Spatial Development Board and the Estonian FSC.
The web map is constantly being updated during the research work. Contributions from local residents and researchers are also welcome.
