EuroGlobalMap

EuroGlobalMap (EGM) is a 1:1 million scale topographic dataset covering 45 countries and territories in the European region.
The coordinate system of EGM is ETRS89-WGS84 (longitudes and latitudes are expressed in decimal fraction). The current version of EGM  is from March 2019.

EGM data is perfect for use as background for many applications such as planning, monitoring, network analysis and presenting environmental policies.

The dataset contains five themes:

  • Administrative boundaries
  • The water network
  • Transport networks
  • Settlements
  • Named locations

The EGM geo-database model has gathered all the feature classes into a unique dataset. Themes are not defined. The feature classes are defined as geo-database simple feature classes: area, line, point. The feature classes hold and define the attribute fields. The features are defined as subtypes of the feature class. Coded value domains have also been defined for attributes at the subtype level.

The EGM geo-database themes hold the following information:

  • The administrative boundaries: the administrative entities down to NUTS3 level and their administrative hierarchy. A unified coding system for all the included administrative levels has been defined.
  • The water network: the watercourses, the open water area, the seaside and the associated hydrologic equipments (dams).
  • The transport network: the roads and railways, ferry lines, airports. Connections between ferry stations and other transport modes have been added.
  • The settlement: the built-up areas and populated places, mainly their name and number of inhabitants.
  • The named locations are text objects which do not relate to vector data but are needed for cartographic purposes.

The EGM metadata is based on the ISO 19115 standard.

The EGM data is now available as open data. More detailed information about the EGM project is available from www.eurogeographics.org.
